I don't like this policy at all. It will cost between $500 million and $600 million in writing up the cheques plus the cost of taxing it back. On the other hand, a tax credit that delivered the same amount of financial value to families would cost under $100 million.



But, the child benefit is a political win for the Tories can be seen in the reaction of the other two major federal parties.



The NDP announced that while they are suspicious of the UCCB, they will keep it. They will then add hundreds of thousands of new, heavily-subsidized day care spaces (which would be even less cost effective than the UCCB).



All that was left for Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau was to promise "bigger cheques." Oh, and he is going to punish those making over $150,000 a year, too.

What good is a tax credit if a couple has a low income and doesn't pay much federal tax?

If low income, not paying much tax if at all, and still struggling, the economy they live in has been meddled with by their government to such an extent that it's time to reduce the size of government expenditure and its regulatory powers so that people on all strata can reasonably function.



Government should never be allowed to set fiscal policy. It ends up mining one lot against another for financial and electoral gains.
