I don't like the timid approach of the federal government, but I guess baby steps are better than the opposite direction. I can understand why corrupt, thuggish big laour does not want to show where they are spending money that people are forced to pay them. It's also little wonder the dippers would oppose anything that breaks the mafia like power of one of their richest backers.

OTTAWA -- Union militants staged brief sit-ins Tuesday at a handful of Conservative MP riding offices to protest a private member's bill that would force unions to show how dues are spent.

 

The bill from Tory MP Russ Hiebert has angered the labour movement and parallels similar legislation in the United States that led to charges and imprisonment for some union bosses after the books were opened to scrutiny.

 

Hiebert's bill is expected to pass third reading as early as Wednesday in the Commons before heading to the Senate. The NDP opposes Bill C-377.

 

The party's labour critic said the Conservatives were taking a page from the Republican playbook by trampling worker rights.

 

Alexandre Boulerice said in the Commons the legislation is "highly flawed" and should be sent to the Supreme Court for a reference before "violating constitutional rights and provincial jurisdictions."

 

Tory MP Pierre Poilievre said he felt bad "to hear such distress and desperation" from a party that relies heavily on union support.

 

"Now they realize transparency is upon them and that we're going to find out how all of this money that these unions forcefully take from workers is spent."

 

Conservative MP Parm Gill's Brampton office was among those occupied.

 

A spokesman said about seven activists showed up at the office demanding to speak to the MP. When that couldn't be arranged, they sat down.

 

"After a while they gave up," said Chris Armes, who described the protesters as civil and respectful of the property.

I'm surprised to see just how much conservatives and libertarians are for big, in-your-face government.

The bill would force every labour organization in Canada to file detailed financial information, including the names and addresses of companies and individuals paid more than $5,000 cumulatively in a year. This information would be posted publicly on a Canada Revenue Agency website. The government spins this as being about union transparency. In fact, it is more about helping employers, the Conservative Party and special interest groups with close ties to them. If passed, Bill C-377 will tip the balance of labour relations in Canada.



The government seems determined to ram C-377 through Parliament, even though legal and privacy experts have testified the bill is likely unconstitutional, infringes on provincial jurisdiction, and constitutes a violation of personal and commercial privacy laws. The net being cast by C-377 is so wide that it would mean even private contractors who clear parking lots or provide janitorial services in union offices will have their names, addresses and the amounts paid to them publicly posted on a CRA website. The Canadian Bar Association says that Bill C-377 is so deeply flawed that it should be withdrawn.

Rich, corrupt, ruthless, big labour and their paid for dipper stooges vs. working Canadians...I'm hopeful, but I won't hold my breath OL.
