Ear Pain

I've been having pain and a tingly feeling in my left ear for a couple months now. I saw my doctor twice about it and he keeps telling me that there's water behind the eardrum and to use a decongestant. I'm taking Dayquil decongestant and it isn't working. Soo I bought some Polysporin ear drops and that's helping with the pain.  I also tried a baby ear plunger thingy but it didn't work. Anyone ever hear of water behind the eardrum? And any ideas how to get it out?

Try a heavy over the counter decongestant like Sudafed. It's probably going to take a while and steady use of the decongestant to get rid of it. I'm surprised the Dr. didn't prescribe a decongestant for it. I would follow up with the Dr. If it doesn't go away soon because it can get infected. Water in the ear can breed bacteria.

Annie my best friend had something similar after swimming and he didn't take care of it in time, he now has partial hearing loss in his left ear.



Not sure if this is the same thing you have but don't fuck around, do what Renee said!!

It feels like it's always plugged and my hearing is less I noticed.  I'll run to the store tomorrow and try that Sudafed Renee suggested. I hope it works, this is getting annoying

I'm not exactly sure. All I know is that water can get in thru the ear canal somehow and if your eustachion tube doesn't drain properly, water can get caught and build up behind the eardrum.

I have not had that, but I get wax build up. I had it sucked out once at a doctor's office. I could hear better.

I'm not exactly sure. All I know is that water can get in thru the ear canal somehow and if your eustachion tube doesn't drain properly, water can get caught and build up behind the eardrum.

Maybe it's swimming or taking a shower?

I recommend you see another doctor to get a referral to see an otolaryngologist. It sounds like you need prescription strength antihistamine or maybe antibiotics to help dissipate the fluid.



If you live in Canada, I assume there might be different procedures to see a specialist. As has been suggested, the worst case scenario involves permanent hearing loss, so you should treat this with more expedience than a roulette of over the counter aids.

The fluid build up needs to be drained..



It should not get to the point it would cause permanent hearing loss shin?

It seems better. I went to buy some Sudafed but they were out so I'm using Nyquil Day and it seems to be helping, oh and Polysporin ear drops   ac_smile
