FGM's origins in northeastern Africa are pre-Islamic, but the practice became associated with Islam because of that religion's focus on female chastity and seclusion. There is no mention of it in the Quran. It is praised in several hadith (sayings attributed to Muhammad) as noble but not required.  In 2007 the Al-Azhar Supreme Council of Islamic Research in Cairo ruled that FGM had "no basis in core Islamic law or any of its partial provisions".

FGM in Egypt is frowned upon after decades of social change and awareness  But that didn't stop the Muslim Brotherhood from working toward bringing the practice back in vogue. At one point they were offering female circumcision at a nominal fee as a public service to the community. No shit.....

I don't find it surprising or interesting.  I find it disgusting, controlling, and abusive, which is commonplace in religions that are desperate to keep a reign on women.
