It is true.  Some of my 'deposits' tend to be very large in length and girth, and the method I use at home is to simply keep an old yardstick by the toilet.  I use this to break up the log into multiple flushable pieces.  Of course, this works well enough at home.  In public, I will use a toilet brush or plunger to do the same, if they happen to be readily available.  However, often times they are not, and I suppose then the poor attendant will eventually have to find some way to deal with it.
