But how can you talk about free market when a government dares to tax an essential product like gas in 50%?

I'm not sure what the total tax bite is on fuel here, but with gasoline taxes, carbon taxes and federal GST on both, It must be over thirty five per cent anyway.

It will be the same as most western economies...somewhere in the high 20's...

We are being robbed in broad daylight by those who are supposed to be helping us.

Much of our tax is wasted on administration.

The problem with Canada is we have federal and provincial sales taxes(every province except Alberta), federal and provincial gasoline taxes on top of a provincial carbon tax which the federal government collects GST on.

Its the same in any Federation...just different methods of theft. You, like us, are supporting multi-levels of Government for no net benefit other than to provide jobs for bureaucracies.

The reasons are the same; our nations formed when it was impossible to govern such a vast country from one place.

That is no longer the case. One Government can easily cover a single nation, without concern for the geographical expanse and tyranny of distance.

But this multi tiered form of government is actually now an industry...and people use it to fulfil ambition. I heard an academic on talk radio but a few days ago talking about this new industry of telling us what to do. We have to change it now, because on its current trajectory, it will eventually bankrupt us all.
