Let's say you want to get your hike on...  get your wilderness on.  Maybe you don't always want to pack a firearm with you.  Maybe you don't have a firearm.  Maybe you're in Provincial Park boundaries where you're not allowed to pack your firearm.



Some people decide to pack a 'Bearbanger,' which is just a flare that goes 'Ka-Boom' at the end (which is 0.8 to 1.3 seconds after being launched, according to box).  In theory the Ka-Boom is supposed to make the bear run away.  Banger is launched from a pen-style flare launcher.  It even has a clip, so you can clip it onto your trousers.

Canadian Tire, MEC, etc...  MEC usually has better prices than Canadian Tire, but membership is required.

The boating-type distress flares are different, so don't buy that flare gun or flares.



Bearbangers are a unique size, and are different from the boating-type distress flares and flare gun that you may see.

Here is a vid from my home Province.  This guy almost met his maker.  The report from his firearm scared off these bears.  Bears do not like loud noises.

I'm surprised bears are scared by anything as they are the top of the food chain and have no predators to worry about.  But I remember hearing people say several times, that if you're camping and a bear comes around, bang on pots and pans etc, make lot of noise.
