Odie, a "sock" is an "alternate" handle; it's used by trolls who pretend to be someone other than their usual persona. It is short for "sock-puppet" which is an old Usenet term. We all suspect there are more than a few over at VF. Socks are run simultaneously with a person's regular posting persona. They are most often used as a support system of the original or host persona during debate or just as a means of trolling. Just so you know I've never seen RW use a "sock" before and to my knowledge I don't think she ever has, also RW doesn't troll. "Gwen" I suspect was her way of trying ease back into the VF community given her previous abrupt and odd departure. But it didn't take very long for most of us with a brain to figure out who "Gwen" actually was.

In topix it seems to mean that if a person has embarrassed himself/herself enough, he/she makes a new account.

I don't care what they call it over at Topix. "Sock" is short for sock-puppet and a "sock" can only be a "sock" when it is as a pretend persona used in conjunction with an original host persona. If I'm not mistaken the term was first used on the old Usenet boards which go all the way back to the early days of interactive forum style internet communication. Back then it was common for some people to have multiple socks running at any given moment. All you needed was a different email address and password. Unfortunately on Usenet anyone can access message headers and view a posters IP address which makes it harder to operate convincing "socks". Back in the day a poster could access a free program that would route a Usenet message thru any number of anonymous servers of your choosing. Unfortunately I think many of those old servers have been shut down and most anonymous servers require a paid subscription before you can access them.
