Airstrikes target Yemen's rebel-held capital after Houthi attack targets Israel



A series of intense airstrikes shook Yemen's rebel-held capital early Thursday, shortly after a Houthi missile targeted central Israel.

It wasn't immediately clear who launched the strikes on Sanaa, which the Iranian-backed Houthis have held for over a decade.

Houthi-controlled media reported the strikes, but offered no immediate information on casualties nor damage.

The strikes happened just after the Israeli military said its air force intercepted a missile launched from Yemen before it entered the country's territory.

Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire deal, mediators announced Wednesday, pausing a devastating 15-month war in the Gaza Strip and raising the possibility of winding down the deadliest and most destructive fighting between the bitter enemies.

The deal, coming after weeks of painstaking negotiations in the Qatari capital, promises the release of dozens of hostages held by Hamas in phases, the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in Israel and would allow hundreds of thousands of people displaced in Gaza to return to what remains of their homes. It also would flood badly needed humanitarian aid into a devastated territory.

Officials from Qatar and Hamas confirmed that a deal had been reached, while Israel hasn't yet commented.

The agreement still needs to be approved by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Cabinet, but is expected to go into effect in the coming days.

The deal is expected to deliver an initial six-week halt to fighting that is to be accompanied by the opening of negotiations on ending the war altogether.

Poland to require all adult men to take military training and consider nuclear weapons as Trump shifts on Russia



The Polish prime minister announced Friday that his government is preparing to require every adult male to undergo "large-scale military training" to more than double the size of the army in the event of a war with Russia.

Donald Tusk added that Poland would also drastically expand its arsenal, saying the country "must pursue the most advanced capabilities, including nuclear and modern unconventional weapons."

Tusk unveiled the plans in a speech to the Polish Parliament on the same day that President Donald Trump, after weeks of weakening U.S. support for Ukraine and traditional European allies, threatened to impose expanded "large scale" sanctions and tariffs on Russia until it reaches a peace agreement with Ukraine.

"We will try to have a model ready by the end of this year so that every adult male in Poland is trained in the event of war, so that this reserve is comparable and adequate to the potential threats," Tusk said.

Tusk told lawmakers he also wants to increase the size of the Polish army to 500,000, from its current level of around 200,000.

Polish women may also be required to undergo military training, Tusk said, but "war is still to a greater extent the domain of men."
