Iran is a highly strategic target with regards to India and China. Both buy a lot of oil from Iran. If we create a USA-friendly Iran, it becomes a huge lever on this and other fronts.

Bin Laden and the Taliban were an asset during the 80's Soviet occupation of Afghanistan...the Syrian president currently serving was a terrorist leader just last year or so. Both have visited the oval office.... let that sink in.
