Now searching York Landing 60 miles as crow flies (120 by road) from Gillam, Man

A member of Winnipeg's Bear Clan patrol group made the sighting around 4:15 p.m. CT after spotting what he believed to be the men near the landfill and water-treatment plant in York Landing.

The area isn't one that locals frequent and there were bears around, said Travis Bighetty.

Bighetty told CBC News he and his partner spotted two "tall, slender individuals" moving very quickly — possibly spooked by the sound of the truck Bighetty was in.

"They fit the description of what was given in the RCMP report," Bighetty said. "It didn't click right away, it took a few moments."

He couldn't tell what the two figures were up to. " kind of figured they were scavenging or something."

Police are asking residents in the area not to disclose the locations of officers on social media.

I wonder how they got there from Gillam? Assuming that was the suspects that were seen.

Dunno. Witnesses can be unreliable on occasions .. maybe cops have no idea where they are at this time

They're on a suicide mission.

@realAzhyaAryola

Did they plan all this or one thing led to another? There is much to find out. They remind me of my sons' younger friends. Some have divorced parents and play video games. I hate to think they will follow a similar path. I hope not.

Hadn't heard about this before

Band constables stopped two young men suspected in three Northern B.C. murders as they drove through the Manitoba reserve of the Tataskweyak Cree Nation, Coun. Nathan Neckoway told Global News.

The pair have since made their way to northern Manitoba. The military and community volunteers are aiding in the search of the remote communities of Gillam and York Landing.

The Tataskweyak Cree Nation is located near Split Lake, about 169 km from Gillam, Man. RCMP have said the last confirmed sighting of Schmegelsky and McLeod was in Split Lake.

Neckoway said the pair was stopped during a routine check for alcohol — a common check since his is a dry community. The constables didn't find anything amiss, reportedly, and the pair was let go

"We weren't aware of their status, of them being wanted," Neckoway said. "Apparently after they came to our community that's when they sent out that wanted [status]."

RCMP would not comment on Neckoway's comments.

Cpl. Julie Courchaine said multiple resources were sent to the York Landing area on Sunday evening, including an emergency response team and a police canine team, after RCMP received a "credible tip" about the suspects in the northern community at around 5 p.m.
