Israel Biological Institute: Two drugs prove effective against corona

The Israeli Institute for Biological Research revealed on Tuesday that two drugs designed to treat Gaucher's disease, a genetic disorder that causes a buildup of fatty substances in organs, has turned out to be effective against the coronavirus.

In announcing the results of the study, the Ministry of Defense stressed that these drugs may also be effective against future outbreaks of new viruses.

One of the treatments is a derivative of Cerdelga, a drug to treat Gaucher's disease that was approved by the FDA in 2014. The Ministry of Defense said that using existing drugs to treat a new disease like Covid-19 can be an effective and efficient way to tackle the disease in the near term.

The Biological Institute said the two drugs that were tested led to a marked reduction in the replication of the coronavirus. The drugs have been tested on cell cultures. They will now be tested on animals.

The Ministry of Defense said the drugs were also effective against several strains of viruses, including influenza and West Nile, meaning it has the potential to treat numerous families of viruses as well as new viruses.

On May 5, the Biological Institute first made news when then-Defense Minister Naftali Bennett announced a "breakthrough" at the lab in finding an antidote to the coronavirus by isolating and developing an antibody that attacks the virus.

The antibody was produced from plasma from animals and from patients who have recovered from the virus.

It had been suggested that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's recent trip to Israel was in part motivated by the earlier discovery at the institute.

There could be a treatment and a cure.

Alberta has suspended it's trials with hydroxychloroquine and the antibiotic in line with the suspended WHO study.

Alberta's trial is very different from those citing safety concerns. The trial suspension is only temporary.

What was published in the Lancet looked at a large number of patients. It was observational and it only applies to people who are already really sick with viral pneumonia from COVID.

Alberta has a different approach. The trial they are running is asking the question: among people who have just been infected, could hydroxychloroquine stop them from getting really sick.

A similar trial in the U.K. has decided to continue operations after deeming its trial safe for patients. U of C professor and co-lead of the study, Dr. Michael Hill said that with no safety concerns of their own so far, he expects a similar outcome for Alberta's trial. Suspension of the study was a routine decision.

Medical Journal Retracts Study Claiming Hydroxychloroquine Is Dangerous

A widely read study claiming the use of the antimalarial hydroxychloroquine to treat coronavirus leads to an increased risk of death has been retracted, the study's publisher said Thursday.

The Lancet, the medical journal that published the original study in late May, said in a statement that they "can no longer vouch for the veracity of the primary data sources," and "due to this unfortunate development, the authors request that the paper be retracted."

The study claimed to have found that there was no benefit from using hydroxychloroquine to treat patients with COVID-19, and that the drug "was associated with an increased hazard for clinically significant occurrence of ventricular arrhythmias and increased risk of in-hospital death with COVID-19."

"We all entered this collaboration to contribute in good faith and at a time of great need during the COVID-19 pandemic," they said.

[No you didn't. ^^ Your TDS caused you to to play politics with an obviously  hokey study that was also outed as pure politics  ...  You knew exactly what you were doing and got caught .. while mercilessly causing  many good studies to go on hold, many Docs to be unsure about using it  and thus indirectly killed many to suit your vile cause ]

We've had people die because surgeries and treatments have been cancelled..

But, mass protests with people shouting are okay.

Experimental Drug Targets Lung Damage and Fatal Blood Clots Caused by CCP Virus

Up to a third of the hospitalized CCP virus patients who are seriously ill are developing dangerous blood clots, according to a study conducted in the Netherlands, and an experimental drug to prevent them is about to be trialed in the United Kingdom.

The drug, a molecule known as TRV027, is set to be trialed in 60 patients with confirmed or suspected infection in hospitals in the United Kingdom, according to a release.

The trial, supported and funded by the British Heart Foundation Centre of Research Excellence at Imperial College London, will follow patients for eight days during the period of intensive care, often when they are on a ventilator.

"Without an effective vaccine for Covid-19, we urgently need to find new treatments which can reduce the damage caused by this virus," said Sir Nilesh Samani, the Medical Director at the British Heart Foundation.

CCP Virus Impacts Hormones

Researches say the CCP virus impacts two hormones—angiotensin II and angiotensin 1-7—and the balance between these two affects the blood vessels and blood pressure.

The CCP virus, or SARS—CoV-2, impacts angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE-2), which maintains the balance between these two hormones.

In March 2020, the RECOVERY (Randomised Evaluation of COVid-19 thERapY) trial was established as a randomised clinical trial to test a range of potential treatments for COVID-19, including low-dose dexamethasone (a steroid treatment). Over 11,500 patients have been enrolled from over 175 NHS hospitals in the UK.

It is a steroid that has been around a long time.

Dexamethasone doesn't seem to help patients with mild symptoms of the coronavirus.

Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews tests positive for COVID-19

Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews has tested positive for the coronavirus COVID-19, two National Hockey League sources outside Toronto have confirmed to the Toronto Sun.

Matthews, 22, has apparently gone into quarantine at his home in Arizona, hoping to be healthy enough and eligible to travel to Toronto and participate in the opening of Leafs camp on July 10.
