Also see above ^^FLASHBACK Jan. 14: WHO Tells Everyone Don't Worry Because China Says Coronavirus Isn't Contagious

The World Health Organization (WHO) tried to cam fears of a pandemic on Jan. 14 by repeating China's claim that coronavirus was not contagious among humans.

"Preliminary investigations conducted by the Chinese authorities have found no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission of the novel #coronavirus (2019-nCoV) identified in #Wuhan, #China," the WHO tweeted.

But the virus' means of transmission was far from the only misinformation coming from Chinese officials.

Beijing reported that the first known cases of the novel coronavirus were recorded in mid-December — but later reporting from outside sources suggested that the earliest cases were tracked in November and kept under wraps.

In addition, Caixin Global reported that Chinese officials had identified the virus as early as mid-December — but were instructed to destroy both their test results and their samples.

Despite the lack of cooperation from China as other nations began to grapple with the spread of coronavirus, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised Chinese President Xi Jinping for China's response with regard to testing protocols and quarantines.

The South China Morning Post noted that one British member of the WHO had referred to the shuttering of Wuhan under a mass quarantine — affecting some 11 million people — as "heroic."

Fending off criticism that he made the appreciative remarks just to save China "face," Tedros insisted that China "doesn't need to be asked to be praised" for its efforts to contain the spread of the virus.

I really don't want to catch it. I smoked for twenty seven years. I heard it's merciless on smokers. I only quit three and a half years ago.

MADRID (Reuters) - The Spanish government said on Saturday it would do whatever was needed to combat the coronavirus pandemic and warned that "the worst is yet to come" after the national toll surpassed 1,300 deaths and reached close to 25,000 cases.

The second-worst outbreak in Europe showed no sign of slowing as the death toll jumped by more than 300 from the previous day. Intensive care units are filling up in some hospitals. "We have yet to receive the impact of the strongest, most damaging wave, which will test our material and moral capacities to the limit, as well as our spirit as a society," Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez told a news briefing.

Taiwan accuses WHO of cozying up to China, not listening to coronavirus warnings

Health officials in Taipei said they alerted the WHO at the end of December about the risk of human-to-human transmission but says its concerns and warnings were not passed on to other countries that could have benefited from it.

Taiwan claimed its doctors had heard from their mainland China colleagues that medical staff treating patients were getting sick -- an obvious sign that person-to-person transmissions were taking place, the Financial Times reported.  Taipei officials said they reported their fears to Chinese health authorities as well as to the International Health Regulations, a World Health Organization outfit that was created to allow countries to work together during health emergencies, but that their information fell on deaf ears.

"While the IHR's internal website provides a platform for all countries to share information on the epidemic and their response, none of the information shared by our country's (Centers for Disease Control) is being put up there," Taiwan's Vice President Chen Chien-ien said.

What's worse is that because the WHO could not obtain first-hand information to study and judge the potential severity of the novel coronavirus, it was slow to sound the alarm, Chen said.

China only confirmed person-to-person transmission of COVID-19 on January 20, after the WHO said in mid-January that there might be "limited" cases of transmission.

Listening to Taiwan's early warnings could have saved hundreds of thousands of people from getting the deadly disease.

The problem, some say, is the relationship between the WHO and China.

Ummmm Ya!!! ... China initially tried to hide it ... Then when they couldn't totally hide it any longer, they still continued to mininize it

Congressional resolution seeks international probe of China's coronavirus handling

Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., and Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., are demanding China fork over money to nations afflicted with the novel coronavirus, arguing the Chinese Communist Party must pay for its "lies" about the early outbreak of the virus.

The pair of GOP lawmakers introduced a bicameral resolution Tuesday calling for an international investigation to quantify the harm caused by the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) cover-up of the early spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

"Since day one, the Chinese Communist Party intentionally lied to the world about the origin of this pandemic," Hawley said in a statement. "The CCP was aware of the reality of the virus as early as December but ordered laboratories to destroy samples and forced doctors to keep silent. It is time for an international investigation into the role their cover-up played in the spread of this devastating pandemic. The CCP must be held to account for what the world is now suffering."

Their resolution's wording condemns the Chinese government for recently arguing that COVID–19 did not originate in China and for alleging "that the United States Army may have delivered COVID–19 to the city of Wuhan."

Stefanik said there's no doubt China "knowingly withheld critical information needed to combat the spread of the Chinese-born COVID-19 and to this day continues to spread lies and disinformation on the origin of the deadly virus."

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have been going after China. Earlier Tuesday, Rep. Jim Banks, R-Ind., introduced a bipartisan resolution to condemn the Chinese government over its handling of the coronavirus outbreak, painting a stark picture of lies and mismanagement contributing to the pandemic that has infected nearly 390,000 people worldwide and killed more than 16,700.
