While the student groups, with chapters at more than 100 U.S. colleges, offer a social outlet for Chinese students adjusting to life in a foreign country, analysts say the organizations also serve a more insidious function: to advance the Chinese communist regime's interests in U.S. academia.

"CSSAs are one branch of a very powerful tree—the center of which is the intelligence gathering, espionage, propaganda of the Chinese Communist Party," said Jacob Kovalio, an associate professor of Asian history at Canada's Carleton University.

........... The CCP has for decades worked in Western countries such as the United States to "spread the word about the 'goodness' of the regime as well as at the same time, establish significant propaganda channels directly from among some Chinese immigrants," Kovalio says.

CSSAs are supervised by local Chinese consulates, he said, adding that the groups are a "major vehicle" through which Beijing transmits its propaganda on U.S. campuses, while also suppressing free discussion of speech critical of the communist regime.

Many CSSAs openly say or have previously stated they are directed, supported, or financed by local Chinese consulates.

For instance, the charter for the CSSA at Saint Louis University in Missouri says the organization is under the "direct leadership and support" of the Chinese embassy and the Chinese consulate in Chicago. The CSSA at the University of Tennessee, in its charter (which has since been taken offline), said that the organization received funding from the Chinese embassy.

The Chinese consulate's grip over the Southwestern CSSA, an umbrella group covering 26 universities in the region, is even more blatant. Its charter says that CSSA presidential candidates must be approved by the Chinese consulate in Los Angeles. It also says that the group receives instructions from the consulate, and lists it as a point of contact on its website.

The Chinese regime's control over CSSAs isn't a recent phenomenon. Frank Xie, now an associate professor in the School of Business Administration at the University of South Carolina–Aiken, came to the United States in 1986 as a chemistry doctoral student at Purdue University in Indiana. He was shocked to discover that the CSSA there was "tightly controlled" by the Chinese consulate in Chicago.

"I wasn't expecting that in a free society. You're still controlled so tightly by the regime in China," Xie said. "I wasn't happy with this."

I knew about theses things for a long time, so I'm glad they're finally being exposed.

Amid talks of further U.S. action to restrict Chinese students coming to the United States, a Texas university has expelled visiting scholars who were funded by a Chinese government scholarship program.

During an interview with the WMAL's Mornings on The Mall Radio Show on Aug. 31, U.S. State Secretary Mike Pompeo said the president was evaluating measures to prevent intellectual property theft by Chinese nationals and students, which could be rolled out over the coming weeks and months.

He said that while not every Chinese student in America is spying for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP),  it is "absolutely the case" that Chinese students are being subject to regular surveillance by Beijing to make sure "they're engaged in behavior that's consistent with what the Chinese Communist Party wants them to do."

China is the biggest threat to the US and they want their stooge, Jim Crow Joe to win in two months.

Pompeo declares China to be greatest foreign power threat to US: 'It's not, frankly, a close call'

Beijing 'has infiltrated the United States in ways that Russia has not,' Pompeo tells 'Hannity'

"It's not, frankly, a close call ... " Pompeo told host Trey Gowdy. "The Chinese Communist Party is building out its military, it has infiltrated the United States in ways that Russia has not, and its economic might has been used through state-owned enterprises and subsidizing companies to destroy tens of thousands of jobs all across the heartland of America, and it's unacceptable behavior.

"President Trump's not going to permit it to continue," Pompeo added. "And then, of course, we're all suffering even today from the Wuhan virus -- the Chinese Communist Party had a chance to slow it down, to stop it, to let the world know what was taking place.

"And instead of giving us full disclosure, they covered up. This is thousands of lives and billions of dollars in wealth destroyed in the United States and all across the world. This is what authoritarian regimes do. It's what President Trump is working to make sure they can never do again to America."

Earlier Wednesday, the State Department announced that it would require Chinese diplomats to receive approval before visiting U.S. university campuses and meet with local government officials.

"These are the kinds of restrictions we have had on us, our diplomats in China, and now we have got a reciprocal arrangement, the same thing President Trump has done, in every dimension," he added. "For 40 years ... the United States took a knee and a bent a knee to the Chinese Communist Party and President Trump has said 'enough.'"

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen (R) presents a medal to Czech Senate President Milos Vystrcil at Taiwan's Presidential Office in Taipei on Sept. 3, 2020. (Taiwan's Presidential Office)

TAIPEI, Taiwan—Czech Senate President Milos Vystrcil met with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen on Aug. 3 as the two states sought to bolster ties despite opposition from China.

The Chinese regime considers Taiwan a renegade province and part of its territory, despite the self-ruled island having its own democratically-elected government, military, currency, and other traits of a nation-state. Beijing opposes words or actions by foreign government officials that recognize the island's sovereignty.

Vystrcil arrived in Taiwan on Sunday, leading a delegation of 89 people including business leaders, senators, and Prague mayor Zdeněk Hřib, despite strong opposition from Beijing.

In a speech given at the Presidential Office, Tsai said that Vystrcil's remarks at Taiwan's parliament two days earlier—when he said "I am a Taiwanese"—had "struck a chord" with many Taiwanese.

The phrase "I am a Taiwanese" was an allusion to John F. Kennedy's famous speech in Berlin in 1963, during which the late U.S. President said "I'm a Berliner" to rally the isolated people of West Berlin. Vystrcil used his speech at the parliament to voice his support for Taiwan's democracy and freedom.

A senior government representative from a European country making an official visit to Taiwan. This is a breakthrough.

The next step for is to drop the misleading Chinag Kai Shek era name of the country and change it to the Republic of Taiwan.

President Donald Trump will prioritize ending "slave or near-slave labor" in China during his second term, senior Trump campaign advisor Steve Cortez told reporters on a Wednesday press call.

"To this day Joe Biden doesn't view china as an economic threat," Republican Michigan Rep. Jack Bergman told reporters on the call. "He has consistently bowed down to the Chinese communist regime."

Cortez argued Biden is a "committed globalist corporatist" who wouldn't take the necessary actions to protect American intellectual property and jobs from China.

"For half a century, Joe Biden shook hands with blue-collar workers and then he turned around and immediately stabbed them in the back," Trump said at his Tuesday rally. "He closed the factories in Baltimore and sent them to Beijing.

Health Minister Patty Hajdu continues to defend the Chinese government's handling of the coronavirus pandemic, saying all countries have difficulties calculating the extent of the virus spread.

In an interview with The West Block's Mercedes Stephenson, Hajdu was asked about her comments earlier in the year when she dismissed as a conspiracy theory a question about whether China had underreported their cases and the severity of the new, highly contagious disease.

"You had dismissed that as a conspiracy theory. In retrospect, do you think that China was honest and was forthcoming in the intelligence it shared with the global community and with Canada about the risks?" Stephenson asked.

"Look, very early on China alerted the World Health Organization to the emergence of a novel coronavirus and also shared the sequencing of the gene which allowed countries to be able to rapidly produce tests to be able to detect it in their own countries," Hajdu said.
