A major leak containing a register with the details of nearly two million CCP members has occurred – exposing members who are now working all over the world, while also lifting the lid on how the party operates under Xi Jinping, says Sharri Markson.



Ms Markson said the leak is a register with the details of Communist Party members, including their names, party position, birthday, national ID number and ethnicity.



"It is believed to be the first leak of its kind in the world," the Sky News host said.



"What's amazing about this database is not just that it exposes people who are members of the communist party, and who are now living and working all over the world, from Australia to the US to the UK," Ms Markson said.



"But it's amazing because it lifts the lid on how the party operates under President and Chairman Xi Jinping".



Ms Markson said the leak demonstrates party branches are embedded in some of the world's biggest companies and even inside government agencies.



"Communist party branches have been set up inside western companies, allowing the infiltration of those companies by CCP members - who, if called on, are answerable directly to the communist party, to the Chairman, the president himself," she said.



"Along with the personal identifying details of 1.95 million communist party members, mostly from Shanghai, there are also the details of 79,000 communist party branches, many of them inside companies".



Ms Markson said the leak is a significant security breach likely to embarrass Xi Jinping.



"It is also going to embarrass some global companies who appear to have no plan in place to protect their intellectual property from theft. From economic espionage," she said.



Ms Markson said the data was extracted from a Shanghai server by Chinese dissidents, whistleblowers, in April 2016, who have been using it for counter-intelligence purposes.



"It was then leaked in mid-September to the newly-formed international bi-partisan group, the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China - and that group is made up of 150 legislators around the world.



"It was then provided to an international consortium of four media organisations, The Australian, The Sunday Mail in the UK, De Standaard in Belgium and a Swedish editor, to analyse over the past two months, and that's what we've done".



Ms Markson said it, "is worth noting that there's no suggestion that these members have committed espionage - but the concern is over whether Australia or these companies knew of the CCP members and if so have any steps been taken to protect their data and people".

CCP Members Hold Positions at British Consulates, Major UK, US Firms: Leaked Database



The Mail found that major aerospace companies Airbus, Rolls-Royce, and Boeing have employed hundreds of CCP members. Additionally, Pfizer and British drugmaker AstraZeneca employed a total of 123 Party members. British automaker Jaguar Land Rover also employed CCP members.



The database also showed that over 600 CCP members were employed across 19 branches of British banks HSBC and Standard Chartered.



Chinese academics with Party membership also worked at British universities, where they were involved in sensitive research including aerospace engineering and chemistry, The Mail found.



Some CCP members worked for British consulates. At the British consulate in Shanghai, one CCP member was a senior official whose duty included supporting visits by British officials to China. Another CCP member worked "near to a team of MI6 officers operating under diplomatic cover," according to The Mail. MI6 is the name of the British intelligence service.



The Mail concluded that "there is no evidence that anyone on the party membership list has spied for China." However, the outlet stated that a group of about 30 MPs said they would table an urgent question about the database in the House of Commons, the lower chamber of the UK's bicameral parliament.



"The [British] Government must now move to expel and remove any members of the Communist Party from our Consuls throughout China. They can either serve the UK or the Chinese Communist Party. They cannot do both," British MP Iain Duncan Smith told The Mail.

'Soft Targets': Chinese Spies Have Been Exploiting US Politicians for Decades, Says Expert



A report that a suspected Chinese spy spent years cozying up to local and national-level politicians reveals that Beijing is investing significantly in long-term espionage operations to infiltrate U.S. politics, an expert said.



From 2011 to 2015, Christina Fang, a Chinese student at California State University–East Bay, cultivated extensive ties with local politicians in the Bay Area by volunteering in fundraising campaigns and attending political events. U.S. intelligence officials believe she was working under the direction of China's top spy agency, the Ministry of State Security (MSS), according to a recent investigation by Axios.



Fang developed close ties to Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), who in early 2015 became a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. She first knew Swalwell when he was a local city council member. Fang later fundraised for the congressman's 2014 reelection campaign, and facilitated the placement of an intern in his office, the outlet reported.



She also had romantic or sexual relationships with two unnamed mayors of Midwestern cities, Axios said.



The operation was "beautifully handled" in the way it combined both intelligence gathering and political influence, said Nicholas Eftimiades, a former senior U.S. intelligence official and author of the book "Chinese Intelligence Operations," in an interview with The Epoch Times.



Importantly, he said, it showed how the Chinese regime is willing to invest in the long game—targeting local officials who might become state or national representatives years down the line. It's a strategy, he said, that "can really be devastating to another country."



Soft Targets

By targeting politicians, Fang was gaining access to those who might shape the United States' policies toward China.



"When you have access to that, why do you need classified information?" Eftimiades said.



"You're basically jumping over the secret world, and getting to the infrastructure that controls the nation," he said. "And that infrastructure is, ironically, not protected."



Congress members, not required to have security clearances, have been particularly vulnerable to covert influence and spying efforts for decades, Eftimiades said.



In 2018, Politico reported that a staffer for Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) was suspected of feeding political intelligence for years to his handlers at the Chinese consulate in San Francisco. The staffer was Feinstein's driver and also served as a liaison for the Asian American community in the Bay Area, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Ending Endless Wars Unlocked Billions to Bolster Navy Against China, OMB's Vought Says



The United States is poised to achieve maritime supremacy under a new plan that utilizes billions saved from "ending endless wars," according to Russell Vought, director of the Office of Management and Budget.



"For the first time, this administration is putting forward something that the president has long promised, and we're putting forward a plan to actually achieve it. We've made progress each and every year to be able to build our Navy back to what it has been—to achieve maritime supremacy," Vought told The Epoch Times' "American Thought Leaders" program.



U.S. officials recently released a 30-year shipbuilding plan that proposes spending $167 billion for dozens of vessels, with the goal of having a 355-ship Navy by 2033.



Some of the funding will come from "shifting direct war costs," according to an accompanying document from Vought's office.



"We achieve savings by ending endless wars. We're already—as a result of going down to 2,500 troops in Afghanistan and Iraq—achieving savings in what's called the overseas contingency operations fund. We've achieved about $35 billion in savings there," Vought said.



"But we also began to limit our growth in military personnel, which is about a third of all defense spending right now. We began to cap Army end-strength, because of what's not needed overseas with these increased deployments that the president has pulled back on."



President Donald Trump has drawn down troops in Afghanistan, Iraq, and elsewhere after promising to do so during his 2016 campaign.



The transition away from staying embroiled in long-running wars with no end in sight is part of a peace-through-strength framework that Trump's administration has been championing, said Vought, who has been traveling across the country to visit shipyards.



"We want to achieve maritime superiority. If you look back in history at all the great countries like the United States—you saw the chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff say it two weeks ago—they are maritime nations. Even as an Army guy, he saw the priority of that, in being able to make sure of that, as we orient the fight towards great power competition," he said.



"In particular, the previous secretary of defense referred to China as our pacing threat. As we try to think through what's necessary for that fight, an increased Navy is first and foremost."
