You have a lot to look forward to..

Ya. We lived and worked 4 years in a non 1st world country, enjoyed it until the area economy went bad, everything changed  and it did not feel safe.

We  came back to stay and will not give it up either

There are things, especially of late, that we don't like, but 1st world has a nice ring to it

The Philippines has an Islamic insurgency.

I believe only in Mindanao islamic area now but there were islamic bombs set off in Manila in 95 - 97 while we lived there  ..  one right in Makati at the Shangri-La where we hung out a lot as it was a short walk from where we lived  .. others in malls  .. There was a flurry between 95 & 99

Now that you bring up  Islamic insurgency., KSM (the brain of Al Qaida) had just been there training bombers  in Mindanao ..  plotting in Manila and Ramzi Yousef, his nephew who did the first Tower bombing was almost captured on Jan 7, 1995. We know the date as it was  just 15 days after we got there in time for Christmas. Coppers raided their apartment and found the plots they were hatching including several airliners + killing the pope who was due there in a month or so. That stopped the plots of course as Yousef was now on the run  ,, and thanks to Philippine  intel, the yanks caught him on his run in Pakistan  via Thailand  .. He's now in jail for life in NY

All the early clues about KSM's coming 911 were there and Philippine Intel knew but the yanks would not listen. The yanks refused to have any idea how brilliant and determined KSM was until 911  actually happened

It was because of all the action while we were there that we  decided to really learn all we could about the ideology

I'm not sure how "hot" Mindanao is today, but it was hot not long ago when  Duterte took them on full bore

I heard the early clues for 9/11 were uncovered in the Philippines.

Above I mentioned what Philippine Intel Dept found on  KSM's airliner plans to crash airliners into buildings in Asia + blow some up 1/2 way to the US .. which was a big clue in itself

They had 3 major plans in process at that moment.

KSM's nephew Yousef had already tried an explosive on a Philippine Airliner to Tokyo. He had flown himself and left a small test bomb under a seat .. on the next flight to Tokyo it went off and killed a Japanese man in that seat but was not intended to bring the plane down .. it was just a test to see if they could get away with leaving bombs on planes for future plans to do it with several planes on their chosen day in the near future

In addition to (1 ) the plan to kill the pope (2) the airliner crashes and bombs and (3 ) they at that same time planned to crash a plane into the CIA Headquarters as a part of it all.. which should have been a huge clue to the US. In fact all of it should have been a clue and further, his nephew had already bombed a Trade Tower

KSM was not only a killer genius but did things big and there are stories that he wanted to use about 10 or 12 planes for 911, but OBL told him no and that would only increase the chances of  the whole plot being found out about .. better to do 4 successfully

I remember seeing the General in charge of Intel on Manila TV literally  pleading for the US to listen  .. but the US had decided it was preposterous to crash planes etc. .. even neglecting the fact that the 1st tower bombing failed to bring the building down and islamists do NOT accept failure .. so logically they would try again. The US was totally clueless as to how islamists thought

Between then and 911, I often mate of I turned on the TV upon rising in the morning to be sure he had not tried it already as we were absolutely convinced he would try it.

In the end because of time difference mate's mom who had lived through WW2 woke us with her call that "The US Defense Dept. headquarters and other buildings have been bombed – We are at war"

The pope part of it was typical KSM. While it seems difficult to do that with many guards surrounding the pope as he went through the streets with viewers lined up on sidewalks to see him ... his plan was very simple. It was to swarm the pope's many protectors with so many KSM followers that while many would get shot, some would get through to the pope (which was all that mattered KSM)

After the plot was broken, the pope did his procession very soon after and nothing bad happened as the plot was busted.

It was quite a day in Manila as most were strong catholics.

Philippine Intel . Did not actually deduce  the plot – they lucked in as Yousef and a helper were working out of an apartment in downtown Manila on KSM's plans ... Yousef left briefly to go shopping and partner caused a stove fire that brought the police  .. So Yousef got away temporarily but cops had the computer which told them the whole story of all 3 plots which were to take place very soon

To their great credit, Intel acted fast on it and prevented all 3 event types from happening and tried to warn the US that they should expect something in the future .. a combination of good luck and great work by their Intel  .. the future part gain  (knowledge of a 911 coming) nullified by the US refusing to listen

The leader of the NDP owes Canadians an apology.
Bigtime he does, not that it will make a difference to his screwed up opinion in his Canada-hating mind

As does the OP who worded the thread so as to tar Canada as exactly what it is not, Canada being one of the most tolerant counties in the world ..  if not even being the most tolerant.... not that I'm expecting it to happen, sigh

For sure hurling the convenient cudgel "i" word to create division  is "Very Much Alive in Canada"

Journalist Glenn Greenwald called out Democratic senators on Saturday who he said were spreading an "absolute lie" about the tragic Pulse Nightclub massacre in Orlando, Florida, that killed 49 people in June 2016.

Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.): "5 years ago, we lost 49 people in a deadly, hate-filled shooting at the Pulse nightclub. The LGBTQ+ community was targeted and killed—all because they dared to live their lives. Once again I say: hate has no place here. And we must end the gun violence epidemic."

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.): "Today we #RememberPulse. 49 lives lost to senseless gun violence and anti-LGBTQ hate. A tragedy that is still hard to comprehend. But tomorrow, with Pulse always in our minds, we continue the fight to end gun violence and hatred. We will not rest until we do."

Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.): "5 years ago we lost 49 beautiful souls at Pulse nightclub. I continue to hold in my heart those who were killed, their loved ones & the survivors of this unspeakable act of hate toward the #LGBTQ+ community. We must #EndGunViolence & build a nation based on love for each other."

Greenwald called out the senators for misrepresenting the motive behind the Pulse Nightclub massacre. It was not, in fact, anti-LGBT animus, but the perpetrator was a terrorist who sworn allegiance to the Islamic State and chosen Pulse Nightclub at random.

"Democratic Senators and activist groups promoting a false, conclusively disproven narrative about the Pulse shootings for their own benefits. Anti-LGBT animus was not part of that massacre. It dishonors the memory of the victims — & the LGBT cause — to lie about what happened," Greenwald said.

I heard this and didn't believe it at first because it was so phony  ... Yes. He killed because they were not islamic.

In fact on this one  I recall that the shooter had been a client of the club for a quite a while  .. and every indication was that he was gay himself.

He killed not because they were gay but because they were a part of us evil non islamics

& Yes, it does "dishonor the memory of the victims — & the LGBT cause" for lying about the motive so that they could  use it for their own agenda
