Diametrically opposite, in fact.

Recently, I've added academia to the list of institutions that are actively operating counter to the needs and wishes of the community.

The term "professor" in my dictionary defines it as someone who has learned much, lacks any knowledge of how ordinary citizens lives their lives, and could not hold a worthwhile job if their life depended on it. Like normal people.

Academics are embedded in the industry of Telling Us What To Do, along with politicians, bureacrats, public servants, religions and large corporations.

We would be well rid of them.

So many people feel they need to tell us how to live our lives.

We need them.

Bricktop

We need contributors to the betterment of society.

We don't need professional despots and do gooders who's sole reason for existence is to tell us how wrong we are and how we can be better people and societies.

Their's is just one opinion with no lesser or greater value than ours.

Al Gore wants to use satellites to spy on who is emitting C02. I guess that won't include himself, Barack Obama, Bernie Sanders, Tom Steyer, Leonardo Dicaprio, George Sorose, Bill Gates and all the other jet setting mega-rich assholes who tell us we must reduce our carbon footprint.

I'm curious why you said that... considering the timeframe in which you served in. I encountered the tail end of it in the mid nineties and was pleasantly surprised in most encounters yet horrified by more than a few.

It was a time before body cameras and evidence based stops.

It all came down to the discretion of the people bailing me up for some suspected infraction, or something purely imagined in a fabrication of falsehoods and semi-truths.

I quickly realised that here in Oz, it didn't matter if a detained person was right or wrong... the actual hurdle was dealing with punch drunk authoritarians who needed to be dealt with like delicate petals, their egos stroked, and their discretionary senses triggered far enough either overtly but mostly towards sublimely write off potential busts real or mostly imagined....

I'd play along with these interactions to a point, but if I was getting tailed for 20-30k's in Victorian bushland and getting nearly rammed up the arse, I'd signal with my indicators, signal with my arm out the window, and come to an abrupt and dusty stop on the side of the road with my fucking licence held out the window for their convenience.

Australian cops weren't really soiled until after 9/11...

...and they've gone off the deep end ever since.

Just look at my state of Victoria these days to witness how far we've fallen as a nation.
Blahhhhhh...

My "No" related to the meme not being humorous...rather a more accurate reflection of where we are in our history. The Fall is closer than we think. Not imminent, nor unavoidable...but close.

It may surprise you to know that those of us outside of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Victoria do not judge the entire nation by your plight. Most of us live in a less dictatored circumstance. Victoria, despite what its citizens may think, is not "the nation".

That said, it is clear that those outside your North Korean enclave are grateful to be so. I would not travel there while Comrade Dan is in power.

But, whilst we agree that your State is under tyranny unprecedented in Australia's history, one question keeps coming to mind.

Why do you keep voting him in?

Last I checked, you still live in democratic principles of electing politicians. How does Kim Jong Dan keep getting the votes?

As I have stated more than once in posts here, you have my sympathy...to a point. Just like the Canadians bemoaning Trudeau, and the Yanks tearing at Biden...you voted them in!!! Self inflicted stupidity, as far as I can tell.

Mebourne has a well connected prog elite like Toronto, Montreal, Washington, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and Chicago. These are the people that control who governs. And these same people are obsessed with power.

Dan Andrews was (and probably still is) a member of the Socialist Party (or student body...can't remember. Freud will know) of Victoria before "moderating" to the Labor Party.

"Upon his election, Andrews fast-tracked Victoria's ties with the PRC. Firstly, he led a group of prominent Victorians to China on his first overseas trip, and promised to send his entire cabinet there during his first term. Eyeing the enormous opportunities with tourism, education and investment,[12] his government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Chinese government under the Belt and Road Initiative in October 2018, but kept its details secret until he released it five weeks later.[13] The MoU involves cooperation on facilities connectivity, unimpeded trade, finance, people-to-people bond, and the "Digital Silkroad". Cooperation will be in the form of "dialogue, joint research, pilot programs, knowledge sharing and capacity building". Andrews said that the MoU "does not bind Victoria to be involved in any specific project or initiative" and "the government will consider both the Victorian and national interest before agreeing to be involved in any specific activity".[13]

On 21 April 2021, the Commonwealth Government used its veto powers to cancel the agreements made between Victoria and China under the Belt and Road Initiative"

"In April 2020, 77% approved of Andrews' handling of the coronavirus pandemic; this was the third highest figure out of all of Australia's premiers.[47] Andrews' approval ratings dropped due to the acceleration of Victoria's second wave of infections and harsh restrictions aimed at suppressing the spread of infections. A September 2020 Roy Morgan Research poll showed that 70% approved of the way Andrews was handling his job as Premier of Victoria,[48] and a September 2020 Newspoll showed that 62% agreed that Andrews handled Victoria's COVID-19 response well.[49] In November 2020, a Roy Morgan Research showed that Andrews' approval rating had increased by 12%, with 71% of Victorian electors approving of his handling of his job"

There's a Taiwanese saying, once you start negotiating with China, you've already lost.

Which everyone in Australia except, apparently, Daniel Andrews was fully aware of. Thankfully the Feds made it clear that he was way out of bounds negotiating with a foreign government and pulled the plug.

Good for the federal government.
