You beat me up so bad Shen?  Now let's discuss slave labour in fricking Thailand :(  Sucks.  I've been looking at where shrimp comes from when I buy it - most of it is Thai, lots is from the glorious land of China.  I'm always hoping to find it from Atlantic Canada but not out here in BC, I suppose.

A bombshell investigation published today from the Associated Press revealed that a seafood staple in many Americans' diets is made largely possible through forced labor in a country that's notorious for its enabling of human traffickers. Much of Thailand's multi-billion dollar shrimp export industry is made possible with child slave labor, some of whom are so young that they have to stand on a stool to reach the table where families are forced to peel and de-vein shrimp for 12 to 16 hours a day.



The AP tracked shrimp processed in Samut Sakhon — a province just outside of Bangkok — where upwards of 10,000 migrant children ranging from 13 to 15 years old,  are shipped in from neighboring countries like Myanmar and Cambodia and referred to not by their name, but by a number. These children are forced to stand hunched over piles of shrimp and process them at breakneck speeds for little to no pay:



Inside the large warehouse, toilets overflowed with feces, and the putrid smell of raw sewage wafted from an open gutter just outside the work area. Young children ran barefoot through suffocating dorm rooms. Entire families labored side-by-side at rows of stainless steel counters piled high with tubs of shrimp.



Tin Nyo Win and his wife, Mi San, were cursed for not peeling fast enough and called "cows" and "buffalos." They were allowed to go outside for food only if one of them stayed behind as insurance against running away.

Most countries in East Asia have laws that forbid child labour and of course slavery, but enforcement is another issue.

I don't know who dominates the shrimping industry in the US.



All I know is that I stay away from the imported stuff. I'm allergic to sulfa based antibiotics so I don't like to take the chance. I will only buy if I know where it came from or if it has the "Best Aquaculture Practices" label or a certification from the "Wild American Shrimp or the Marine Stewardship Council". That way I know it's been raised or harvested properly and it's free from antibiotics.



If I have a choice, the seafood I buy comes from a local restaurant and fish market. It's all fresh wild caught fish and a lot of it such as the clams, oysters and mussels are locally harvested. You pay a little more but you know what you are getting.

Much of the fish caught off Canadian shores is processed abroad. The excuse given is they cannot find Canadian applicants. Pardon the pun, but that sounds fishy to me. :icon_wink:

I do not live close to the sea, so the fish we get is never really fresh..



What do posters think of farmed fish?



I found out some of the fish I buy has been farm raised.

We try to stay away from farmed. Too many bacterial possibilities from such confinement, and as the fish don't work as hard the muscle is weak

Is all fish clearly marked if it is farm raised or does ocean caught fish proudly display that label?

Look for shrimp caught in the Atlantic.  I try to - but it doesn't seem to be around on the West Coast.

I was in Newfoundland - there's a cooperative there - they process the shrimp right in town.  Might be hard to find - but watch for that.  I always read the back of packages - I can't buy most things :(  I end up eating things from places I don't support regardless when I eat outside.

I'm confused about farmed fish - don't know much about it, as with most things.  I was in a class - I think it was organic chemistry.  We were warned against eating farmed salmon because it contains neurotoxins.  They feed the farmed salmon something to control the lice population.  So I stay away from farmed salmon.  Other fish, I don't know.

Not always.  Farmed salmon are "atlantic salmon" on the west coast.  I'm not sure about the east coast.

If you mean Tilapia, I wouldn't eat it. It's similar to bluegill. Eats anything. I can only imagine what they feed it at the farm?
