Chinese stocks trading on U.S. exchanges dipped on Jan. 4 after the New York Stock Exchange announced that it would delist shares of China's three large telecom companies in light of President Donald Trump's new executive order regarding companies with ties to China's military.

On the first trading day of 2021, a sharp fall in the shares of three Chinese telecom carriers led to an initial sell-off across Chinese shares on U.S. stock markets amid fears of further U.S. sanctions.

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) announced on Dec. 31 that it would delist the three state-owned companies China Mobile Ltd., China Telecom Corp. Ltd., and China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd.

The announcement came after Trump's executive order that banned investing in companies with ties to the Chinese military, formally known as the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

Leaked Documents Reveal Chinese Regime's Orders to Steal Foreign Technologies

A series of leaked government documents recently obtained by The Epoch Times reveal that Chinese authorities have funded projects that are aimed at obtaining foreign advanced technologies through partnerships with international research institutions. Public records show that China's Ministry of Science and Technology is behind the efforts.

Budget for 'Transferring' Foreign Technologies

Hebei International Talent Exchange Association (also known as International Technology Transfer Center) was established in 1988 in Hebei Province. It has more than 200 international technical projects and more than 300 foreign experts, covering more than ten fields, including artificial intelligence (AI), information communication, biology, medical, and health.

The organization issued a report, "Hebei Provincial Budget Project Performance Evaluation Form" on Nov. 17, in which it explicitly states that the group aims to "introduce foreign advanced technology ... and realize technology transfer [to China]."

To achieve that goal, the document specified that the organization would expand cooperation channels with at least 50 international organizations; set up a minimum of four international scientific and technological cooperation activities; maintain at least 50 foreign technology projects; obtain at least five cooperation intention agreements; and target 60 to 80 foreign technical experts for recruitment.

The report laid out a 1 million yuan (about $153,000) budget for the association to recruit talent from overseas and fund the projects they would set up in Hebei. It also projected a profit of 10 million yuan (about $1.53 million) that could be achieved by "transferring" foreign advanced technology to Chinese companies in Hebei.

President Donald Trump late Tuesday signed an executive order that bans transactions with eight Chinese connected software applications, including Ant Group's Alipay.

The order released by the White House bans transactions with people that develop or control Alipay, CamScanner, QQ Wallet, SHAREit, Tencent QQ, VMate, WeChat Pay, and WPS Office, as well as with their subsidiaries.

Trump said in the order that additional steps must be taken to protect U.S. national security in the face of the "pace and pervasiveness" of the spread of certain software applications in the United States, developed or controlled by people in China, including Hong Kong and Macau, which "continue to threaten the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States."

https://img.theepochtimes.com/assets/uploads/2021/01/06/GettyImages-490009850-700x420.jpg">

Beijing is looking forward to a new U.S. administration after Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi said Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden represented a "new window of hope" for the Sino–U.S. relationship.

Wang made the remarks last week in an interview with Chinese state-run media Xinhua and China Media Group. He also expressed hopes that the incoming U.S. administration will "return to a sensible approach," according to a government transcript.

He took a swipe at the Trump administration, saying that in recent years, the United States has tried to "suppress China and start a new cold war." The Chinese regime has frequently used this rhetoric, especially during the 2018–2019 trade war, to criticize the administration's China policies.

He also accused U.S. policymakers of having "serious misconceptions" about China and called on the United States to "respect" China's social system.

Wang concluded his interview by saying that the two countries could resolve their differences "as long as the United States can draw lessons from the past and work with China in the same direction."

The Trump administration has confronted the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) on a range of issues, including unfair trade practices, espionage, malign influence in the United States, security threats posed by Chinese technology, and its human rights abuses against religious minorities and Hong Kong residents.

Biden's critics have expressed concerns that an administration under him would be soft on China, and Chinese state-run media have openly stated their preference for Biden.

Beijing only too eager for foreign capital to prop up Chinese economy

https://img.theepochtimes.com/assets/uploads/2020/06/03/TencentAlibaba-YES-700x420.jpg">

The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) runs one of the world's largest pension funds, with assets of $434.4 billion at June 30. It and two other big Canadian pension funds, including the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, remain strongly bullish on China despite plenty of reasons not to be.

Aside from a number of geopolitical risks, particular challenges with investing in Chinese companies are that some pose national security concerns or may be complicit in human rights violations. They have also been criticized for not being transparent in their financial reporting, and according to Chinese law, may be called upon to serve the needs of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) at any time.

Another issue is barriers to liquidating investments in China and repatriating the funds.

"The most recent change in tone and aggression of the Beijing government would cause any board to be reviewing its risk analysis," Liberal MP John McKay told The Epoch Times.

"It's a far riskier investment. I don't know how you can arrive with any other conclusion," he added. "The political risk has changed, so also has the investment risk."

Chinese law prohibits oversight by foreign entities of the reporting of Chinese companies, creating a worrying lack of transparency for financial markets regulators. The United States is taking steps to institute a level playing field for companies listed on its exchanges by delisting Chinese companies that don't comply with regulatory requirements, like Luckin Coffee.

Canada is calling for the immediate release of 53 pro-democracy figures who were arrested in Hong Kong Wednesday after being accused of violating Beijing's new national security law, specifically on charges of subversion of state power.

The mass arrests include pro-democracy activists, former lawmakers, and politicians—the largest crackdown on the city's opposition camp since the draconian security law went into effect on June 30, 2020.

Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister François-Philippe Champagne condemned the mass arrests as a "grave repression of political pluralism."

"It demonstrates a total disregard for Hong Kong's Basic Law & further erosion of the 'one country two systems'," Champagne said on Twitter Wednesday. "We call for their immediate release."

Canada should grant refugee status to political dissidents from Hong Kong. That would enrage the CCP of course.

'It needs to stop': Candace Owens suing Facebook fact-checker 'funded by arm of Communist Party of China'

In November, Owens announced that she was launching a lawsuit against Facebook's fact-checkers. "It is time to fact-check the fact-checkers," Owens declared.

Ownes alleged that the fact-checkers are "activists for the left that shut down your speech if they don't like it." The conservative firebrand claimed her Facebook page was unfairly demonetized, and was she was suing the fact-checkers for defamation.

In less than two weeks after announcing the lawsuit, one of Facebook's third-party fact-checkers was forced to issue a correction. Politifact, one of Facebook's biggest fact-checkers, had to retract a "false" rating it labeled one of Candace's posts about Joe Biden.

Owens delivered an update on her fight against big tech censorship on Saturday. The political and cultural commentator released a new video on Saturday, where she announced a new target that she has set her sights on.

"Well, I'm suing a site called 'Lead Stories," Owens said in the video. "Lead Stories is run by a former CNN employee of 26 years, who makes a living cannibalizing and slandering conservative content and creators."

"His website has published disputed fake news stories, including one that went after my content personally, so I'm going after him...personally," Candace said.

"Who funds Lead Stories? According to their own masthead, Lead Stories is funded by Facebook and Google, along with ByteDance," Owens explained. "And what is ByteDance? It's a Beijing-based company that owns the TikTok spyware app. Our own Justice Department says the company is a 'national security threat and compromised by the Communist Party of China.'"

"Facebook then is paying for fact-checkers funded by an arm of the Communist Party of China to censor my content, here, in America. The Communist Party of China had more say over my content than the First Amendment," she added. "This is insanity. It's un-American. It's dangerous. And it needs to stop. This is why I am fighting."

Owens launched the Fact-Check Zuck site for her legal battle against Facebook and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

In September, Justice Department lawyers said ByteDance CEO Zhang Yiming has made public statements showing he is "committed to promoting" the agenda of the Chinese Communist Party, as reported by NPR.

The White House recognized ByteDance as a potential security risk because of CCP ties in August:

TikTok, a video-sharing mobile application owned by the Chinese company ByteDance Ltd., has reportedly been downloaded over 175 million times in the United States and over one billion times globally. TikTok automatically captures vast swaths of information from its users, including Internet and other network activity information such as location data and browsing and search histories. This data collection threatens to allow the Chinese Communist Party access to Americans' personal and proprietary information — potentially allowing China to track the locations of Federal employees and contractors, build dossiers of personal information for blackmail, and conduct corporate espionage.

The Chinese regime has this past year broadened its repression of groups domestically while ramping up human rights violations around the world, a bipartisan U.S. congressional commission warned in its annual report.

The Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC) said in the report released on Jan. 14 that the "Chinese Communist Party has taken unprecedented steps to extend their repressive policies through censorship, intimidation, and the detention of people in China for exercising their fundamental human rights."

It said that new evidence emerged last year that "crimes against humanity—and possibly genocide—are occurring" in the region of Xinjiang, where Beijing has subjected Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities to a vast campaign of repression including detention, forced labor, forced sterilization, and mass surveillance.

In Hong Kong, Beijing "dismantled" the "one country, two systems" framework that it had promised upon the city's reversion to Chinese rule by imposing the controversial national security law in July 2020, the report said. The law, it said, was "clearly meant to target, intimidate, and silence Hong Kong's robust civil society."

The report called for a formal U.S. "determination on whether atrocities are being committed" in Xinjiang, and such a determination is required within 90 days of U.S. legislation passed on Dec. 27, 2020.

CECC co-chair,  Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.), called China's actions to crush human rights in the past year "shocking and unprecedented" and urged Congress and the incoming Biden administration to hold Beijing accountable.
