What is the biggest threat facing the world today?  Who or what should we be fearing the most?  Is it Putin? China? Islam? Nuclear warfare? Or something else....?

Truthfully I don't think there is one single "biggest threat". It's more like a compounded mess of shit.

That's because you have extremists on both sides of the issue who have large sums of money invested in their pieces of the pie. It's only natural that the info that you are fed will be conflicting. As with most sociopolitical issues it is probably a safe bet to assume the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

I agree.  It says something when a large swath of the population doesn't trust its science community.  It either says that the science community (or process followed by the science community) is corrupt or that the population is scientifically illiterate.  Neither is a particularly appealing option.

I attend a lot of conferences about security concerns where the organizers sponsor admirals from various world navies to come and present their plans for the coming years.  The admirals frequently mention the security impacts of climate change as a driving factor in decision making about fleet make-up.  I also attend a lot of similar conferences about oil & gas where the oil and gas majors make statements about the impact global warming has on their fleet make-up.



I've never heard any of them question it.  Call me crazy, but I've never really considered the world's navies and the oil and gas majors as bastions of environmental liberalism.

Accepting climate change and lowering emissions is the official policy for all oil companies.

The London-based Saudi newspaper Al-Hayat quoted a source in the country's religious police who said authorities searched Nassar's home and found books on sorcery, a number of talismans and glass bottles filled with liquids supposedly used for the purposes of magic. The source told the paper Nassar was selling spells and bottles of the liquid potions for about $400 dollars each.



CNN could not reach Saudi Arabia's religious police or Justice Ministry for comment.



Amnesty says Nassar's execution is "the second of its kind in recent months. In September, a Sudanese national was beheaded in the Saudi Arabian city of Medina after being convicted on 'sorcery' charges."



The human rights group said the number of executions in Saudi Arabia has almost tripled in 2011.



"So far at least 79 people -- including five women -- have been executed there, compared to at least 27 in 2010," the Amnesty statement said.



This is not the first sorcery case in Saudi Arabia to spark outrage from human rights groups. In 2008, Lebanese TV host Ali Hussain Sibat was arrested on charges of sorcery while in Saudi Arabia on a religious pilgrimage. In 2009, he was found guilty and sentenced to death. While Sibat has not been executed, he remains in prison.



Saudi Arabia's judicial system also made headlines this month for the sentence imposed on Australian national Mansor Almaribe, who was convicted of blasphemy while performing the Hajj in the kingdom, and sentenced to 500 lashes and a year in prison. The Australian government is pleading Almaribe's case.

The biggest threat to human civilisation and progress is Islam.



Followed closely by America.
