He/she's about average for what I've seen around here.  Saw one running down the sidewalk by Riverview not that long ago...

Luckily most of our bears are typically afraid of humans, generally speaking, and will not confront a human (unless they have a cub nearby).



Koala's are neat!



Grizzly's are potentially dangerous, but do not live where I live.



Up North, a 12 Gauge shotgun or 30.06 is a suggested companion when in Grizzly country.



An interesting fact for you...  Polar Bears are one of the only land mammals to have NO natural fear of humans, and are EXTREMELY dangerous to be around.  You would not want to even be in their vicinity, unless armed.

Most of the bears around here though, are not aggressive, and just wandered down from the mountains looking for an easy meal (garbage cans)...



These bears are afraid of humans, and will run from them, unless they have a cub around.  If you see a baby bear here, get the fuck out of the area, stat!  Don't stop and try to pet it, or feed it!

NEVER assume a black bear isn't aggressive.  They can go from zero to 60 at the drop of a hat, with or without cubs.



All of our bears are dangerous and should be treated as such.

Not too long ago here in NJ. a black bear mauled a hiker to death....No cubs involved. I also read an account of a black bear chasing a guy up onto the roof of his house and then eating him.



Black bears are notoriously unpredictable and you should never underestimate them. Pound for pound they are the strongest bear alive. There is a reason they can climb trees. The strength in their paws and limbs is phenomenal. Even a fully adult male that can weigh between 350 lbs and 500lbs can climb a tree with ease. They have been seen flipping over 300lb rocks with a single fore paw, like it was child's play.



They are also extremely smart. They have been observed learning visual tasks as quickly as a chimpanzee. This makes about the most successful bear species alive today.



As for Mel's comment on Grizzlies being "potentially dangerous", that's a falsehood. Grizzlies are 100% dangerous. They will kill and eat a human at the drop of a hat. Even Timothy Treadwell, the so called "Grizzly Man",   who lived among the bears for several years, learned the hard way. Most of him and his girlfriend ended up as fertilizer in the form of bear shit.

Grizzlies are territorial so if you come across one, chances are you're on its turf.  They are actually more predictable than black bears.



I think the black bear populations are on the rise as we're seeing a lot more of them out and about these days.
