I'm going to go and disagree on the 30-06, not because it's a bad cartridge but because there are better ones for that application. There are a plethora or 45-70 lever actions on the market, new and used and any one of them make a better bear defense gun.l

The firearm pictured above is a Marlin guide gun model 1895SBL. Note the stainless steel barrel and receiver. Note the modern composite stock. Note the modern weaver site rail.....it is chambered in 40-70 government and .450 Marlin and designed expressly for close range dangerous game.



Note the compactness of the weapon...perfect for wheeling around in heavy brush under the pressure of a charging grizzly.....Who the fuck in their right mind would choose an 30-06 long ass, slow to load, bolt gun over a handy compact canon like the Marlin in heavy cover?....Only a fool would do that. Only YOU would be so stupid. The only weapon chambered in 06 that even comes close is the Winchester 1895....long out of production and even during it's day...unpopular. Or the savage M99 in .300 savage. But even those are unwieldy compared to the Marlin and the .300 is light for a big angry bear.

BTW, a lot of professionals would readily recommend for the average hiker that you skip the long gun and carry "big iron" instead...44 mag, ...45 long colt...454 Casull,...475 Linebaugh etc.

Well what would you do if you were inside a small tent and a bear started thrashing it with you in it? I gave it a warning yell, the gun was for a back up. It didnt come to that.
