Americans are drinking themselves to death at record rates

QuoteAlcohol is killing Americans at a rate not seen in at least 35 years, according to new federal data. Last year, more than 30,700 Americans died from alcohol-induced causes, including alcohol poisoning and cirrhosis, which is primarily caused by alcohol use.

In 2014, there were 9.6 deaths from these alcohol-induced causes per 100,000 people, an increase of 37 percent since 2002.

This tally of alcohol-induced fatalities excludes deaths from drunk driving, other accidents, and homicides committed under the influence of alcohol. If those numbers were included the annual toll of deaths directly or indirectly caused by alcohol would be closer to 90,000, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Where is a march for banning alcohol? we really need one ASAP!  90,000 lives per year are at stake.

Another in the long line of vacuous arguments proffered by the "I want a gun" lobby.

If something other than a gun kills you, and its legal, then guns should be legal.

Here's some American hypocrisy for you; America doesn't want North Korea or Iran to possess nukes, despite the fact that as sovereign nations, it is their right to do so. But America doesn't think they are responsible and sensible nations, and so wants to prevent them from acquiring them.

Meanwhile, any lunatic in the US can purchase firearms, because it is their right to do so, and if people get killed, tough.

I would like alcohol banned, but it will never happen and I know it will have consequences.

Bricktop

There is no basis for banning alcohol, because it is a matter of personal choice.

It is part of society, which 90% of people can enjoy without any problem at all.

I accept the idea is off the table.

America tried it.

It didn't work.

Oddly, in order to implement prohibition, the American constitution had to be amended..."the brewing industry was shut down in state after state by the legislatures and finally nationwide under the Eighteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution"...the same Constitution that they claim cannot be amended to prohibit private gun ownership.

More lies from the gun lobby.

The last amendment to the American constitution delays laws affecting Congressional salary from taking effect until after the next election of representatives..

It was submitted  for ratification September 25, 1789 and ratified on May 5, 1992.....202 years, 7 months and 10 days later.

Bricktop

The point being that the Constitution that they hide behind as a god-given, never to be challenged RIGHT to possess a firearm is just a piece of paper.

They will use any fatuous justification just to feel BIG with a gun.

American politics moves like a glacier in a cold winter. I don't expect another amendment ever.

Self interest is the dominant force in American politics.
