'Queen of rock 'n' roll' Tina Turner dies at 83

">

Tina Turner, the American-born singer who left a hardscrabble farming community and abusive relationship to become one of the top recording artists of all time, died on Wednesday at the age of 83.

She died peacefully after a long illness in her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland, her representative said.

Turner began her career in the 1950s during the early years of rock and roll and evolved into an MTV phenomenon.

In the video for her chart-topping song "What's Love Got to Do with It," in which she called love a "second-hand emotion," Turner epitomized 1980s style as she strutted through New York City streets with her spiky blond hair, wearing a cropped jean jacket, mini skirt, and stiletto heels.

With her taste for musical experimentation and bluntly-worded ballads, Turner gelled perfectly with a 1980s pop landscape in which music fans valued electronically-produced sounds and scorned hippie-era idealism.

Sometimes nicknamed the "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll," Turner won six of her eight Grammy Awards in the 1980s. The decade saw her land a dozen songs on the Top 40, including "Typical Male," "The Best," "Private Dancer" and "Better Be Good to Me." Her 1988 show in Rio de Janeiro drew 180,000 people, which remains one of the largest concert audiences for any single performer.

Semaglutide — sold under the brands names Ozempic and Wegovy — took the world by storm when the drug, intended to help diabetes patients control their blood sugar, became popular for its weight loss effects.

Now a blockbuster weight loss drug, much of Hollywood and people looking to shed pounds have flocked to get the shot, despite not having diabetes.

But now users are complaining the drug is also causing them to lose their hair.

"I've noticed my hair is shedding a lot, like every time I brush it my brush has a full [clump] of hair, or if I run my fingers through it, a bunch of strands come out straight with the root," said Ozempic user Lola Stark in a Reddit thread on the subject.

On TikTok, user @thegeriatricmillennial documented her hair loss with the hashtag "#ozempic," showing chunks of hair that had fallen out.

"The last month I have lost so much hair," she said. "I know it's to be expected when you have rapid weight loss, but the rate at which it's falling out is terrifying."

In Wegovy clinical trials, hair loss did show up in a small number of participants.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown, the unstoppable running back who retired at the peak of his brilliant career to become an actor as well as a prominent civil rights advocate during the 1960s, has died. He was 87.

A spokeswoman for Brown's family said he passed away peacefully in his Los Angeles home on Thursday night with his wife, Monique, by his side.

One of the greatest players in football history and one of the game's first superstars, Brown was chosen the NFL's Most Valuable Player in 1965 and shattered the league's record books in a short career spanning 1957-65.

Brown led the Cleveland Browns to their last NFL title in 1964 before retiring in his prime after the '65 season to become an actor. He appeared in more than 30 films, including "Any Given Sunday" and "The Dirty Dozen."

An unstoppable runner with power, speed and endurance, Brown's arrival sparked the game's burgeoning popularity on television.

As Black Americans fought for equality, Brown used his platform and voice to advance their cause.

Everyday is a fight to keep blood sugar levels under control.

Get a continuous blood glucose monitor. I'm using the Libre FreeStyle 2 and my A1c dropped from 11.2 to 7.4 - being able to see if it's trending up or down really helps.

"The social media influencer claimed that she was "paralyzed with fear" when the couple allegedly attempted to kidnap her children"

That right there makes me call b.s. - any mother would viciously start fighting to protect her children.

Her death is hardly a loss.

True but it is part of the country's history so it should be noted.

The White woman who accused Black teen Emmett Till of making sexual advances toward her before he was brutally beaten and lynched by her then-husband has died, multiple outlets report.

According to The New York Times, the Associated Press and Mississippi Today, citing the Calcasieu Parish Coroner's Office, Carolyn Bryant Donham died Tuesday while in hospice care in Westlake, La. She was 88.

Mississippi Today reports Donham had cancer at the time of her death.

Donham, who was a 21-year-old shopkeeper in Money, Miss., at the time of Till's killing, accused the teen of propositioning her and lewdly grabbing her at her family's grocery store on Aug. 24, 1955.

Several days after the accusations, the teen was kidnapped from a relative's home in the middle of the night, beaten and lynched.

Photographs of Till's mutilated body taken at his funeral in Chicago were printed in the media and caused outrage around the country and overseas. His lynching, and the subsequent acquittal of his killers, became a catalyst of the national civil rights movement.
