Initially it was for people in the death throes of terminal illness, though recently the requirements were widened to the point where if you suffered from depression or even if a doctor didn't feel like treating you, they could actively encourage you to off yourself.

 Yeah I wish I could FEEL that. I already have an unhealthy attachment style and deep fears of abandonment so once I LOVE someone...just the thought of them being gone is deeply horrifying to me.
