Wallace Amos Jr., founder of Famous Amos cookies, dies at 88



Wallace "Wally" Amos Jr., the founder of Famous Amos cookies, has died, his family said Wednesday. He was 88.

He died "peacefully" at home following a battle with dementia, his family said.

Amos, a native of Tallahassee, Florida, opened the first Famous Amos cookie shop in Hollywood, California on the famed Sunset Blvd. in 1975. Amos' cookie brand exploded in popularity over the years, becoming known for its signature beige packaging and blue lettering.

"With his Panama hat, kazoo, and boundless optimism, Famous Amos was a great American success story, and a source of Black pride," read a statement from the Amos family.

The statement continued, "It's also a part of our family story for which we will forever be grateful and proud. Our dad taught as the value of hard work, believing in ourselves, and chasing our dreams. He was a true original Black American hero."

'Hollywood Squares' host, Broadway star Peter Marshall dies at 98


LOS ANGELES (AP) — Peter Marshall, the actor and singer turned game show host who played straight man to the stars for 16 years on "The Hollywood Squares," has died. He was 98.

He died Thursday of kidney failure at his home in the Encino neighborhood of Los Angeles, publicist Harlan Boll said.

Marshall helped define the form of the smooth, professional, but never-too-serious modern game show host on more than 5,000 episodes of the series that ran on NBC from 1966 to 1981.

But he was often closer to a talk show host, and the tic-tac-toe game the contestants played, while real, was all an excuse for a good time. The questions Marshall posed to regulars like Paul Lynde, George Gobel and Joan Rivers were designed to be set-ups for joke answers before the real ones followed.

"It was the easiest thing I've ever done in show business," Marshall said in a 2010 interview for the Archive of American Television. "I walked in, said 'Hello stars,' I read questions and laughed. And it paid very well."

Greg Kihn of '80s 'Jeopardy' song fame dies at 75


Greg Kihn, a rock and roll musician best known for his '80s hit songs "Jeopardy" and "The Breakup Song," has died. He was 75.

Kihn died of Alzheimer's disease Tuesday, his management team said in a statement posted to Kihn's website.

Born July 10, 1949, in Baltimore, Kihn moved to the San Francisco area in the 1970s and was signed to Beserkley Records. With a songwriting style that blended folk, classic rock, blues and pop, his Greg Kihn Band had their first hit with "The Breakup Song," released in 1981.

In 1983, "Jeopardy" rose to No. 2 on the Billboard HOT 100 songs chart behind Michael Jackson's "Beat It." The song was also seen and heard regularly in the early years of MTV. Kihn's albums often carried entertaining titles that played off his name — from "RocKihnRoll" and "Kihntinued" to "Kihntagious and "Citizen Kihn."

Martha Quinn, an original MTV VJ, posted a tribute to him Thursday on social media, saying, "My condolences go out to his loved ones, and thank you Greg for the Rock KIHN Roll."

"Weird Al" Yankovic did a parody of "Jeopardy" in the '80s called "I Lost on Jeopardy." Kihn said that he loved it and that it gave his song more of an afterlife than it might otherwise have had, Variety reported. "It was a brilliant parody," Kihn said. "He invited me to appear in his video, and I had a ball."

Kihn was also a longtime DJ starting in the mid-1990s for KUFX radio in the San Francisco Bay Area and was a nationally syndicated nighttime radio host.

Phil Donahue, Legendary Daytime Talk Show Host, Dies at 88



Renowned "King of Daytime Talk" Phil Donahue, who created and hosted the The Phil Donahue Show, died on Sunday, Aug. 18 at the age of 88, PEOPLE can confirm.

In a statement first reported by the Today show on Monday, Aug. 19, Donahue's family said the groundbreaking TV talk show journalist died in his home surrounded by his family including his wife of 44 years — actress Marlo Thomas — as well as "his sister, his children, grandchildren and his beloved golden retriever, Charlie."

The statement noted he "passed away peacefully following a long illness."

Donahue's family requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Phil Donahue/Notre Dame Scholarship Fund.
