A lot of Muslim countries including Turkey used to be Christian.

This chilling story is not happening in a vacuum! Iraq, incredibly, is on the verge of allowing marriages to 9 year old girls. The world of course is aghast, but what one has to remember, this has support in some Islamic writings. It is not islamophobic to point  this out. Muhammad, the founder of Islam as per the hadiths married a equally young Ayesha and sadly child marriages have been a problem in parts of the Islamic world since.

Now you can say that those Hadiths and other traditional writings are not authentic but the fact is they have been accepted by the majority of the Islamic world since their inception over 1200 years ago.

This is appalling and shame on the Iraqi govt for even thinking of allowing this.

I grew up in one of the most multicultural cities in the world. Muslims lived on my street, went to my high school, played in the same baseball and hockey leagues and we hung out. Their religion was not once an issue. It was a private matter and they never imposed it on anybody.
