People seventy five and older in Alberta can now book an appointment for vaccination..

Dr Deena Hinshaw thinks most people over seventy five will get at least their first shot by the end of March.

cc

We are starting at eighty, details on making appointments any day now

The 1st period of March will be slow as they will be going to homes one at a time for over 80 using medical assistance at home (including their support workers) - then open to others over 80 by appointment at mass injection facilities where things will get fast (starting by or before Mid March)

Update - Monday morning for exact details & instructions - although apparently plans have been leaked

Update 2 - Everyone over 80 will be contacted for appointments over next 2 weeks

They are now planning a mixture of home care & non home care who can go to 1 of 172 locations to speed things up

In Alberta, there will be fifty eights sites across the province where the vaccines will be administered..

For seniors that don't drive, or can't arrange their own rides, rides to and from the sites will be arranged.

Even with vaccines, there is no plan to give people back their liberty.

Dr. Fauci says vaccinated people can't dine indoors or go to the movies

But a vaccinated person does not need to quarantine if exposed to COVID-19

President Joe Biden's top health adviser and coronavirus expert Dr. Anthony Fauci said on Monday that even people who receive a coronavirus vaccine won't be able to go out to eat or go to the movies because of "the safety of society."

Fauci answered that there are several things even vaccinated people will not be able to do as long as there is a high rate of coronavirus in the U.S.

This week, the U.S. death toll from the coronavirus topped 500,000. According to NBC News, more than 28,206,600 cases have been confirmed in the U.S. Though the average number of daily new cases is in decline, Facui warned that "the burden of virus in society will be very high, which it is right now."

"So there are things, even if you're vaccinated, that you're not going to be able to do in society: for example, indoor dining, theaters, places where people congregate," Fauci said.

"That's because of the safety of society. You, yourself, what you can do when you are together with another person, we are looking at that, and we're going to try and find out very quickly what recommendations could be made about what people can do," he added.

Fauci explained that health experts do not know whether a vaccinated person, though he may be protected from symptoms of disease, could still carry the coronavirus in the back of their nasal cavity at a contagious level. That is why he and other health experts recommend that vaccinated people continue to wear masks, to prevent potential spread of the virus to others.

He said that researchers hope to find that the virus level is "quite low and you're not transmitting it," but clarified "we don't know that now. And for that reason, we want to make sure that people continue to wear masks despite the fact that they're vaccinated."

Our pm says that Moderna will deliver 1.3 million doses to Canada in March.

A big delivery of Pfizer is supposed to be on it's way. We shall see.

It still doesn't put us on track for everyone who wants to be vaccinated to receive it by fall.

Supposedly the numbers will be caught up to what was committed to by end of March .. at least that's what we have been told here

and that March will be a busy month for vaccination crews

The system was overloaded today in Alberta with people over seventy five trying to book appointments.

Yes. I heard seniors broke it

In BC, 70-80 % of tests include testing for variants.  By next week, all tests will include testing for variants .. along with trying to determine extra transmissibility and severity

A new COVID-19 strain is spreading at an alarming rate in New York City, according to two academic studies submitted this week. The research from teams at Caltech and Columbia, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, suggests that the variant known as B.1.526 could dampen the effectiveness of some current vaccine candidates. Below is everything we know about the research, the mutation, and how it may affect the pandemic in New York almost one year after the city was first inundated by the coronavirus.

How common is the new strain at this point?

The variant known as B.1.526 began showing up in samples collected in New York City in November. To chart its rise, Caltech researchers scanned for mutations among hundreds of thousands of COVID genetic sequences in a database known as GISAID. By mid-February, the Caltech team found that B.1.526 cases had risen to 27 percent of viral sequences in the database. Columbia researchers, meanwhile, sequenced 1,142 samples from patients at the university's hospital and found that 12 percent had a case with E484K, one of the two variants that makes up B.1.526.

Dr. David Ho, one of the Columbia researchers, noted that cases in Westchester, the Bronx, and Queens suggest that there is some level of community spread involved with the new variant. "It's not a single outbreak," he told the New York Times.

The available vaccines are less effective for this strain?

Good question - I posted only some of it - it ends with

.......... "It's not particularly happy news," Michel Nussenzweig, an immunologist at Rockefeller University, told the Times. "But just knowing about it is good because then we can perhaps do something about it." Nussenzweig also said that the mutation blocks the activity of a common class of antibodies.

"People who have recovered from the coronavirus or who have been vaccinated are very likely to be able to fight this variant off, there's no doubt about that." He added that "they may get a little bit sick from it."

[Seems the answer is a yes and a no - but effects are clearly much milder if a vaccinated gets it - and they have not yet quantified the numbers in those vaccinated vs. not vaccinated ]
