UK Officially Bans China Owned Huawei From Participating In Their 5G Rollout

It's Official!!!

Britain bans Huawei from 5G network as Boris Johnson rejects China's threat of 'consequences'

Decision reverses earlier policy to allow Chinese tech giant access to network and follows growing pressure from US to alter course

British culture secretary Oliver Dowden says nation will be 'clear-eyed about China' and security risks

Huawei Technologies will be banned from Britain's 5G network, the UK government announced on Tuesday in a major U-turn.

The decision follows escalating tension with Beijing and pressure from Washington and could add to the pressure on other European countries to review their approach to the Chinese telecoms giant.

By tearing up his earlier policy to allow Huawei up to a 35 per cent share in the non-sensitive parts of Britain's 5G networks, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has ignored threats from Chinese officials that there will be "consequences" if the UK treats China as a "hostile partner".

The decision is one of the multiple signs of growing unease in Europe about China's actions, including the imposition of national security law in Hong Kong and its initial handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

Britain made a wise decision.

That they did!!

Don't expect Trudeau to make a decision that benefits Canada.

In effect, Canada now has no choice but to ditch it (in "real" terms)

However, Justine does not live in a real world and acts only in "his own" interests  .. often at the expense of his meaningless countypeople

He has to choose between China and the Five Eyes. There is no middle ground

I suppose he could get Canada's  intel .. which is always mainly on China ... from China. Now there's a plan  ac_smile

Trudeau thinks his personal interests are national interests. It depends on the nation. China's interests yes, Canada's no.

Now more than ever, Canada needs strong relationships with our friends around the world. Our economic recovery, health and security rely on free trade with our strongest partners.

We must be at the table with Boris Johnson, working on a trade deal with Britain, Australia and New Zealand.  This important CANZUK deal needs to happen.

Strong trade with these countries adds weight to Magnitsky sanctions and other measures against malevolent regimes like the Chinese Communist Party.  We need to stand together.

In a time of great change we must work with our trusted allies and friends, the free and democratic nations of the world, always putting Canada's interests first.

Agree 100

Working in together  with trusted friends is the answer to getting back on track. For far too long we have worked with our common enemy and paid a price for it

Britain, Australia US are natural and trustworthy friends. Seems our great leader doesn't see clearly that Canada could & should be the 4th in a very tight protective group

That sounds like a sensible potential trade pact.

cc

That's the kind we need. 1 on 1 or groups of trusted counties where all benefit

Things like the WTO never worked for most except it worked exceedingly well for China

Trade deals between countries benefit big corporations not workers.

cc

For bad deals of which we have had many in the past, that is correct

In the past we have been plagued by dumb deals that hurt workers

During the period of open trade China ate our lunch ... which was easily predicable

For new smart deals that result in our country selling more goods on a fair playing field it has to "by definition" make more work  for workers

Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Singapore, South Korea, New Zealand,  Netherlands and Switzerland would disagree with you. All small countries that have prospered through trade.

Britain's decision to ban Huawei from its 5G networks has dealt a painful blow to China. Until recently, China was still counting on Britain to stick to its earlier decision to allow the Chinese telecom giant to supply non-core equipment for the country's 5G networks.

But two recent developments made such a decision untenable.

The first was the United States' escalation of its war on Huawei. The U.S. instituted a new sanction in May banning suppliers that use its technology from providing semi-conductors to Huawei. Because U.S. technology is used to manufacture the advanced semi-conductors that Huawei's products – including 5G base stations – require, the company's supply will be cut off, making production of its 5G equipment in the future nearly impossible.

The prospect that a key supplier of Britain's 5G networks would no longer be able to build and maintain its system is a far more serious threat than potential Chinese snooping is. No responsible government can afford to take such a risk. So, Huawei's days were numbered as soon as the U.S. government pulled the trigger in May. The only question was when British Prime Minister Boris Johnson would tell Chinese President Xi Jinping the bad news.

The second development, which made it politically easier for Mr. Johnson to embrace the Huawei ban, is China's imposition of its new national security law on Hong Kong. This draconian legislation, which was proposed in late May and passed by China's rubber-stamp parliament on June 30, has for all practical purposes ended the autonomous status of the former British colony. From Britain's perspective, China's action is a blatant violation of the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration on Hong Kong, which includes China's pledge to respect and protect the city's legal system and civil liberties for 50 years after its reversion to Chinese rule in 1997.

Chinese leaders might think that Britain is too weak to fight back. Clearly, they are wrong. Britain has decided to take a stand on Hong Kong – and Huawei is an easy and obvious target.

Yes. I'm so proud of Boris coming through. He is refreshingly always gutsy and unafraid to do the right thing

Also for Trump starting it and giving Boris both reason and support

This may force other European counties to think it through  better

And actually key of article is that China is not as strong as many think and acting from weakness in many areas  .. something I have felt or some time now

If other countries act together smartly, strongly and together, China can be kept under control

Another or Parallel Problem for China

They are really living on the edge - If the "now bent" 3 Gorges Dam fails, China will be set back decades .. and at moment it's a very close call. Even if it holds "for now" they have been set back greatly by poor water system planning and will have to cut back a lot for future

There is nothing more destructive than over confidence
