.....To buy a raw piece of land or a fixer upper like the one you've cited?

Seems fixing up an old house is more expensive than building an inexpensive one from scratch?

Years ago I helped renovate this old home made in the 19th century.

We took out all the interior walls and what was interesting was there was no mould nor leaking - and this was in Vancouver where it rains a lot like Seattle. The insulation was old papaer.

But now they can't even make a house that'll last 20 years
And if it does they fall apart and need thousand$ in repairs.

Hers is not outside the realm of possibility but she also appears to have gotten lucky.

Vancouver has had oingoing problems with leaky condos since the 1980s when building codes laxed, the old tradesmen died or retired. problems we never saw in abundance prior to that Prowler. And they still persist. eg:
